Our second tour to Austria started from the Bangor area on the 9th September 2001, we flew from Manchester to Gatwick and from there to Munich, where a luxury Mercedes coach was waiting to take us to Hotel Fuchs in Söll. Some of us were fortunate to have rooms with balconies and could enjoy breathtaking views of the Alps and surrounding hills. Monday was a “free day” when we went up the Hohe Salve-1828 metres high-in a cable car and got caught in a snow storm at the top, but we were able to have coffee and Apfelstrudel in the Restaurant. On Tuesday, we went on a trip to Innsbruck and spent the morning walking around the town. In the afternoon we travelled to Achensee - Lake Achen, it is the Tyrol`s largest and most beautiful lake. On the way back to Söll the Choir attended a practice in the parish church, where our conductor Mr James Griffiths gave us the shocking news of the American atrocity. We could hardly believe that this terrible thing had occurred. After the concert on Tuesday evening, at which we were joined by the Kuftsteiner Singkreist we acted as hosts, and both choirs retired to the Hotel Postwirt, where we had a “Get Together” which included a meal and an evening of Tyrolean music and folk dancing, the “star” of the show being our Secretary -David.!! Thursday evening we gave a concert in the church at Jochburg, after which we were taken to a near-by hotel by the church members for refreshment. Friday we visited Salzburg, where we gathered in the cathedral to remember those that died in the American tragedy in a three minute silence, after which the members of the choir present and their wives very quietly sang the famous Welsh Hymn Gwahoddiad. We then had time to tour the town, sight seeing and saw Mozart`s birth place and monument, we also came across an unusual shop which had 7 sections all filled with counters of eggs {blown} which were decorated with many designs and colours to suit every occasions. Saturday we left Hotel Fuchs and travelled to Kufstein, which is situated on the River Inn where we spent our last night in Austria. We left Austria by coach on Sunday and travelled to Munich and then to Gatwick, where we really found out what extra precautions had been put in force against high jacking assassins. Security was so tight that they even confiscated my wife`s little nail scissors, which resulted in Ingrid being teased and being labelled a terrorist We eventually boarded our plane for Manchester where our coach was waiting to take us home. How lucky we are as a choir, to have such a marvelous secretary, his efficiency in organising this tour was faultless, and we cannot thank David Price enough for all the work and the hours he spent before and during the tour seeing that everything ran smoothly and that we had such a wonderful time. We must also thank Mrs Menna Leyshon who took over as our accompanist, as our regular accompanist was unable to come with us, but Menna was an asset to our choir.
